One of my favorite people died today. Joe Cocker. I think one of my favorite all time films was Mad Dogs Englishmen and Joe Cocker. Younger, wilder days in the record biz. These guys had a hard time touring in the U.S. because the Grease Band couldnt get through customs. Heroin, cocaine were screened for. I did see Joe Cocker once. He looked like a person that lived as hard as he sang. Well, it takes its toll. Joe left us with a wealth of performance art to remember him. Thanks for everything Joe, see you on the flip side. While he won Academy Awards and Grammys for his more commercial stuff, the more obscure songs he recorded, I feel, really mirrored his soul. So many of those, but three songs really stand out in my mind. Delta Lady, I Shall Be Released and Bird On The Wire Delta Lady https://youtube/watch?v=5Yo9EvSCHlY Woman of the country now that I found you Longing for your soft and fertile delta And I whisper sighs to satisfy your longing For the warm and tender shelter of my body Your mine, yes your mine delta lady Your mine, be all mine Delta lady Please dont ask how many times I found you Standing wet and naked in the garden And I think of days And different ways I held you We were closely touching, yes our heart was beating Your mine, yes your mine delta lady Your mine, be all mine Delta lady Oh when Im home again in England I think of you love Cause, I love you, love There are concrete mountains in the city And pretty city women live inside them Oh but yet it seems the city scene is lacking Im so glad your waiting for me in the country Your mine, yes your mine delta lady Your mine, be all mine Delta lady I Shall Be Released https://youtube/watch?v=Dpyhl85MYmU They say everything can be replaced Yet every distance is not near So I remember every face Of every man who put me here I see my light come shinin From the West unto the East Any day now, any day now I shall be released They say every man needs protection They say every man must fall I swear I see my reflection Somewhere so high above this wall I see my light come shinin From the West unto the East Any day now, any day now I shall be released Now, yonder stands with me in this lonely crowd A man who swears hes not to blame All day long I hear him shout so loud Cryin out that he was framed I see my light come shinin, yeah From the West unto the East Any day now, any day now I shall be released Well, I say Any day now, any day now I shall be, I shall be released, hmm And Bird On The Wire https://youtube/watch?v=Wq1IYSmSvdE Like a bird on the wire, Like a drunk in a midnight choir I have tried in my way to be free. Like a worm on a hook, Like a knight from some old fashioned book I have saved all my ribbons for thee. If I, if I have been unkind, I hope that you can just let it go by. If I, if I have been untrue I hope you know it was never to you. Like a baby, stillborn, Like a beast with his horn I have torn everyone who reached out for me. But I swear by this song And by all that I have done wrong I will make it all up to thee. I saw a beggar leaning on his wooden crutch, He said to me, You must not ask for so much. And a pretty woman leaning in her darkened door, She cried to me, Hey, why not ask for more? Oh like a bird on the wire, Like a drunk in a midnight choir I have tried in my way to be free Oh and just for good measure, how about a big dose of Cry Me A River, Joe Cocker style? https://youtube/watch?v=ayWCfSyBmvs I keep on runnin baby I keep on runnin But I just cant hide No, I just cant hide I keep on hurtin baby I keep hurtin so deep inside So deep inside Lord I need your smile Child like the one I once knew Made my grass green And my blue skies blue Lord was time when two was one Tell me now girl Whereve all the good times gone Cry me a river Wash my blues all away Cry me a river Girl you are my riverboat Take me away Is reachin out my hand Wont ya please help me to my feet once again Tears fallin like rain Lord its time When everybody needs a friend Girl whereve you been Lord I need your smile Child like the one I once knew Made my grass green And my blue skies blue Lord was a time when two was one Whereve all the good times gone Cry me a river Wash my blues all away Cry me a river Girl you are my riverboat Take me away
