One of my first years as a high school band director, we did a show down in Aynor SC. After getting our butts kicked the first two weeks of the year, we laid down a hot performance and we won our first show of the season. After the awards, this hand from an extremely tall, older gentlemen grabbed the back of my neck and he said, You kicked my butt, Im proud of you. This man was Charlie Allen Jr. of North Myrtle Beach High School and a legend in the communities of Scotland County and Bladen County where I teach. This meant a lot to me, as it served as a validation that just maybe I knew what the heck I was doing. Charlie passed away tonight and went to teach at the big band room in the sky. Thinking about all of his colleagues down in Horry County and his famly and of course his students at North Myrtle Beach High School.
