One of my grooms to his bride about the stellar importance of holding hands, awake and asleep: "I like the color of sunlight when you’re lying in bed, drifting gently through the leaves of a tree outside your window when it’s not quite time to crawl out from under the covers and face the day yet. It is a good thing to stare vaguely at the dancing pattern swaying branches trace on your ceiling as your half-asleep mind wanders. It’s a good time to think about what the day could be and isn’t yet and might hold; it’s a good time to roll over and shut your eyes tightly against it. But the best thing is when you roll over and find a hand in bed beside you that you can hold gently while you sleep, because you are instantly reminded again that all that chaos that lives in your dreams in the night and all of the mess that happens in the world in the day happens while, the whole time, you have a very important someone facing those same adventures and struggles with you. It’s a simple thing, but you miss it fiercely when it’s absent and revel in its presence. It is powerful and communicates a wealth of information in a physical touch. I am here. I am here. I promise to always hold your hand." - For K. on our wedding day, K.
