One of my oldest and fondest memories is when the stupid Republicans nominated President Gerald Ford over Ronald Reagan in a closely heated delegate floor fight in the summer of 76 and Ford with the power and perks of incumbency narrowly prevailed. As soon as Reagan gave his concession speech everyone in the convention hall and watching on tv KNEW how badly the Republicans had just screwed up. Even at 14, I saw it, knew it and was pissed! That November Ford barely lost to Carter. Had Reagan been the nominee, Carter would have gone back to his peanut farm.
