One of my recreational activities is taking a creativity workshop based on Julia Camerons The Artists Way series. Our assignment for last week was to take a photo and interpret it in oil pastels. My subject photo is below on the left and the resulting creation is on the right. Or is it the other way round...oh, youll figure it out. If you havent realized how I feel about this sort of thing, well, you havent be paying attention (or you just missed those posts ;-) Yet I saw an opportunity here for some serious learning. Grabbing a pencil I started drawing a sketch. After I had something on the canvas, I got out the oil pastels and started playing. Never having worked with them before, there was some experimenting and mistakes that took place. Yet the real point of the exercise for me was suspending the inner critic--my ego. Now I could point out each spot where I feel that it is less than perfect, each flaw and failure to execute to my expectations, still my honest appraisal is that its fairly good, especially for someone who hates to draw.
