One of my students, who was never a reader, has finally caught the bug. She actually came to our last session with a book she was reading for herself, a book that had nothing to do with school. She discovered Shakespeare last year and she is suddenly infatuated. She has decided she hates her English teacher because the schedule informed her that her class would be doing excerpts from Hamlet. The teacher then gives an assessment test to see what they all remember from last year. This includes an essay question. She ignores the essay question and instead writes, Dude, EXCERPTS from HAMLET?! Seriously? I have created a monster.
