One of our Founding Fathers Passed away,PROSPECT — Mr. Anthony P. Szantyr, 89, passed away at Saint Marys Hospital on Monday, April 14, 2014. He was the widower of Jean (Parks) Szantyr. Mr. Szantyr was born in Waterbury on May 30, 1924, a son of the late Casimir and Mary E. (Zolkiewicz) Szantyr. He was a longtime Prospect resident, and a Marine Corps veteran, serving during World War II. He worked for more than 20 years at the Prospect Recycling Center and prior to that at Scovill Manufacturing and Century Brass for many years. He was a member of the Marine Corps League and a founding member of the Young Marines of America. He was a dedicated and active member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. He was a prayerful man, who spent his life saying the rosary and daily visits to the Blessed Sacrament at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. He leaves his sons, Martin Szantyr of Waterbury, Dennis Szantyr of Prospect, and Michael Szantyr of Greenbush, Maine; brothers, Frank Szantyr of Prospect, and Rev. John Szantyr of Waterbury; a sister, Teresa Gratton of Waterbury; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sons, Ray and Paul Szantyr. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 21, by his nephew, Rev. Eugene Szantyr, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, 86 East Farm St., Waterbury. Burial with military honors will follow in Prospect Cemetery. The Naugatuck Valley Memorial/Fitzgerald Zembruski Funeral Home, 240 North Main St., Naugatuck, has been entrusted with his arrangements.
