One of our all-time favorite quotes on attitude is by Viktor Frankl, Dr. of Psychiatry and a Holocaust survivor. (20 sec read) He said, “Our attitude towards what has happened to us in life is the important thing to recognize. Once hopeless, my life is now hope-full, but it did not happen overnight. The last of human freedoms-- to choose ones attitude in any given set of circumstances --is to choose ones own way.” -Viktor Frankl The last human freedom, the one that cannot be taken away, is the right to choose your own attitude. Frankl talks of how the people who survived the best in the concentration camps were those who chose to care for other’s needs, often giving away their meager portions of food to the sick. People who focused on the horribleness of the situation would die before people who were more sickly than them. Of course, God’s commands are intended to enable us to live the best possible life, and He has commanded us in Phil. 4 to keep our thoughts focused on the good, on what is “true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, praiseworthy.” Choosing God’s way of focusing on the good is to live life in this realm of the freedom that cannot be taken away—to choose your own attitude in any given set of circumstances! -Pastors Alisa & Gary Children’s Ministry Today
