One of our favorite Mighty Girl films of the past year was just released on DVD this week -- Girl Rising! When this groundbreaking, independent film on the transformative impact of educating girls was first released, supporters organized thousands of screenings around the world to help spread its important message: when you educate a girl, you can break cycles of poverty in just one generation. If you havent seen it, the critically acclaimed film tells the stories of “9 extraordinary girls from 9 countries, written by 9 celebrated writers and narrated by 9 renowned actresses, including Meryl Streep, Kerry Washington, and Alicia Keys.” It’s astonishing but true that there are 33 million fewer girls in primary school than boys, according to the UN initiative Education First. The film is part of the 10x10 - Girl Rising campaign to reach global audiences and inspire individuals to take action for girls. It showcases the strength of the human spirit and the power of education to change the world.” While ultimately uplifting, this film tackles many challenging topics and has been rated PG-13, although we have heard from many parents who have also watched it with older tweens in order to discuss the issues raised by the film. We highly recommend it as an excellent choice for home viewing or in the classroom.
