One of our missions at The Ann Arbor Art Center is to promote, connect & celebrate local artists of all levels, ages and walks of life... Today we want to present Kim Rhoney. Kim graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a degree in Fine Art and an emphasis in drawing and painting. Her studio is located at her family’s mini-farm in Milan, Michigan where her gardens and rural surroundings provide the inspiration for her work. An expressive painter with her own sense of color, Kim uses oil paint with cold wax to apply rich pigments in luminous layers. She employs knives and/or brushes to apply the paint and build a surface that is as interesting as the subject. Flowers, bird nests, native wildflowers, bees, rural landscapes and fruiting trees are frequent series in her work. She has shown work as far as Chicago and New York City. Currently, she exhibits at Sleeping Bear Gallery in Empire, Michigan and is a regular at some of the areas most prestigious fine art fairs including Ann Arbor’s South University Fair in July. Kim hosts an annual Open Studio Event in the late spring each year, where collectors and followers flock for the big preview of new work as well as the homemade egg salad sandwiches that she makes with eggs from her own flock of hens.
