One of the arguments I often hear from people who are against raising minimum wage is: Well...maybe if they worked harder and moved up, they would get paid more. If they went to school and learned computer programming, they wouldnt have to work low paying jobs. etc. If everyone moved up into higher paying positions, who would cook our food, drive our cabs, buses, check our reservations at hotels, handle our baggage at the airport, landscape our lawns, harvest our food crops, tally up your purchases and cut your hair? Every working American who goes to a job and spends time away from their families everyday deserves a livable wage. Whether the are doing an exhausting, physically demanding job or working in a shopping mall serving smoothies. Many family problems are directly related to parents being away from home for 8-12 hours a day working a job. The stress often results in marital problems and the absence of the working parent(s) is related to our troubled youth. Paying higher wages will not only strengthen the economy by boosting consumer spending, it will also allow families to spend more time together by not having to spend as many hours away at a job. I experienced this myself when my children were small. I worked two jobs and was at work 12-16 hours a day. You would think I was doing quite well working that many hours, but at that time (1986), the minimum wage was only $4.50 an hour.
