One of the best ways to feel powerful as a man is to dress up as a beautiful, confident woman. Its more jarring than the threat of physical violence. Classic aggressive phrases like Ill rip out your throat and Freak pale in comparison to what power you gain over someone else. Because whats powerful about you is that youre so comfortable with yourself, you can wear/express yourself in anyway that seems desirable to you. And that upsets people. These people who have weird, arbitrary rules on whats right and wrong, and whats normal. Rules they refuse to follow but somehow, they expect others to listen to them so they can feel comfortable. Thats real power. Thats real strength. The ability to love yourself completely while accepting those who are different around you. The ability to be happy with yourself while seeing everything in the same light. That people exist like stones and streams, like towering mountains and secluded valleys, as sprawling plains and shadowy forests. We are so diverse and beautiful in our own way. And that is why I must humble myself and say, their existence, like this glorious planet, has a right to exist. And in no way am I allowed to deny their right while flaunting my own in their face. I made grown men squirm and stare away in an attempt to ignore me. I caused posh, refined women to act like little children as they sneered and lobbed backhanded comments at me. They questioned my gender, my orientation, my reasoning for my choices as my actions breathed life into the new reality that THEY struggled to cope with. And all the while, I greeted, welcomed, and helped each and every last one of them. Because at the end of the day, as wonderful and unique individuals we may be, we are all the same. We seek to feel safe, to feel secure, to feel loved and appreciated, to feel welcomed. We chase after this dream, our own reality that we search for and seek refuge in. And I believe now, more than ever that the entrance will remain forever locked to those who find it. For the key is composed of love, acceptance, empathy, and compassion, for both yourself and the people around you. And as an American of 24 years, I can say that our country harbors too many cowards, and too few heroes and heroines who are willing to grasp their own escape from the cage of anger, judgement, resentment, and inferiority that binds and controls their actions. And as a man that has discovered such a great and terrible power. To make others feel confused and insecure as they frantically try to label me, to place me in their world. To generate such pain and anguish in people that their only available coping mechanism is to lash out to attack me. I have to remind myself that I am not responsible for their actions. The way I dress and express myself is for me and me alone. That the pain they caused me will be brief and will melt away as I remind myself WHO I AM. The the perpetrators will drift away, celebrating their shameful victory as they pour their poison that rots them from the inside out into the lives of others. But as a key holder, I have a responsibility to show others the way. So, Ill set the table and ready our meal. Ill reserve your spot and send you a reminder that no matter how much you hate me. No matter how much you wish for me to go away so that you can feel comfortable in your normal reality; as we wander the surface of an organic rock with a molten, radioactive core. Ill listen to your arbitrary excuses as you struggle onward in life, carrying the weight that caused you to lash out at me so violently; as we spin around a heated ball of plasma. And Ill console you as you blame me for your suffering and the suffering of the world. And Ill sit here until the day I die. With the same warm, welcoming smile. For death will be the end for all of us one day. But, the ability to love and feel loved will carry on humanity for all eternity. So Ill keep loving each and every last one of you. For we are lost children and powerful, terrible Gods at the same time. For your actions create the present and shape the future. So what will it be? Will you take the key?
