One of the best ways to spend time in sumptuous Venice is to book a hotel right smack in the middle of the historic center, and wander for a few days through its narrow streets and over its myriad bridges. Get lost, discover youre going in circles, find a new shop or a tiny restaurant, check out the Jewish quarter or stumble into a Vivaldi concert in a 400-year old church. Maybe hire a gondolier for an outrageous amount (fix the price and the duration *before* you step into a gondola!) and see the city at night from the water. However you do it, it is a city not to be missed! However... one of the worst ways to spend time here is to debark from a cruise ship and become one with the mass of others doing the same for at most a day. Starting next year, this wont be as much an issue - Venice is disallowing these ships to dock near the historic center. This will help preserve the city itself, and will ease the strain on all visitors.
