One of the greatest adventures in the settlement of the New World - Bill Gilbert, Chief Archaeologist with the Baccalieu Trail Heritage Corporation, speaking at the unveiling of a plaque at Harbour Rock Hill in Carbonear in 2012, the 400th Anniversary. He describes the overland journey of the crew of the shallop, George Wichalle, William Hadden, Bartholomew Pearson, George Frewin and Samuel Butler, who were shipwrecked in Bay de Verde on the return voyage and walked the roughly 38 miles (60km) from Bay de Verde to Carbonear where they found a boat in which they sailed back to Cupids.
