One of the greatest obstacles to cultural and artistic advancement - TopicsExpress

One of the greatest obstacles to cultural and artistic advancement is over-dependence on the tried and familiar. If we are to evolve, we need to be able to embrace that which is new and different from what we know. In the coming months, this page will begin to feature content that is less canonical, and more varied in its scope and relevance. That goes for historical information and content as well, and for material dealing with Woody Shaw, his music, his era, and his contemporaries. There has been enough recirculation of the same aesthetic and ideological discourse over the past several decades within jazz, producing offshoot upon offshoot of debate and diatribe, which does little to change the course of dialogue and informed appreciation within creative music. It is time for some new light and color and some new angles on where this music actually comes from, what it meant, and what it means. I ask that people remain as open as they have been, understanding that a departure from the familiar is an often necessary prerequisite for outward growth, and, often times, for liberation. Whats been said has been said, whats been done has been done. It is time to move forward. Stay tuned. —Woody Shaw III
