One of the greatest truths in the New Testament that is being ignored or abused is the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. Many ignore Him and think they can build churches with money, sophisticated equipment, or beautiful buildings. Others abuse Him by misinterpreting His work of dispensing spiritual gifts. For example, speaking in tongues is just one of the gifts, and it is NOT the sole evidence that one has been saved. God didnt give me the gift of tongues. He gave me the gifts of pastor-teacher and mercy. Every true child of God has been given one or more spiritual gifts to use in the Body of Christ. The gifts are meant to edify and strengthen the church. When we are regenerated by the Holy Spirit and born into the kingdom of God, the Holy Spirit gives us these gifts. Too many people dont know what gifts they possess, but everyone who is saved should identify His/her gifts and use them for the glory of God. Ephesians 5:18 commands us to be filled with the Spirit. The meaning in the original Greek is that we are to be filled time and time again. This will happen if we will walk in the Spirit and follow His leadership in our lives. It is the Spirits work to glorify Christ. So the gifts we receive are not to glorify ourselves, but to glorify the Lord Jesus. If you feel the need to live life in the Spirit (and every Christian should feel this way) then find a quiet place, pour out your heart to the Lord, and by faith receive the filling of the Holy Spirit. Faith is what brought you into saving union with Christ and faith will bring you into intimate fellowship with the Spirit. Life in the Spirit is the only way we can become more Christlike and fruitful in our walk with Christ.
