One of the iconic songs of the 70s that isnt about what you think it is, at all. Written and recorded by Gerry Rafferty in 1978, Its about the protracted 3 years of lawsuits and counter lawsuits that surrounded the breakup of his former band Stealers Wheel in 1975. Rafferty was barred from publishing or recording any material for 3 years after the band’s breakup. He was regularly traveling between his family home near Glasgow and London, where he often stayed at a friends flat in Baker Street. As Rafferty put it, everybody was suing each other, so I spent a lot of time on the overnight train from Glasgow to London for meetings with lawyers. I knew a guy who lived in a little flat off Baker Street. Wed sit and chat or play guitar there through the night.
