One of the main conditions the Americans must have imposed on the dismantlers of the Soviet Union must have been the metaphoric castration of all their major politicians. That could explain the inert policies the current administration is following. The subservient grovvling to the "beloved partners" we hear from Putin and Lavrov conveys a serious message that the Russian Federation is now just like any other obedient Gulf state. But it seems this is a one-sided love because it is also apparent the US politicians do not trust or like the Russians and are stil suffering from the Cold War hangover. Imagine Putin first encourages Snowdon to go to Russia and once there imposes a pre condition that he must not upset his partners.
