One of the more disappointing conclusions Ive encountered in a published work comes from the new book In Tune: Charley Patton, Jimmie Rodgers and the Roots of American Music : Without his musical abilities Charley Patton likely would have been another sharecropper who lived and died in the steamy cotton fields of the Mississippi Delta, and Jimmie Rodgers would probably have been little more than a street kid who spent his life grinding out a meager living with the railroad or doing odd jobs. Because they could play music, other people noticed them.
