One of the most celebrated strategic Filipino victories against the United States, as well as the last stand of one of the youngest and greatest Filipino general who stood behind Gen. Aguinaldo: Gen. Gregorio Del Pilar who was 24 years old when he achieved the task assigned to him- to meet and face 300 Texas Rangers with only 60 Filipino soldiers. Del Pilar was able to force the Americans to abandon a frontal assault even after two company charges with over eleven wounded or dead on the US side. Five ours later, Del Pilar was able to give Aguinaldo enough time to march into safer ground- all 200 miles of it (320 km)- long enough for the Americans to abandon completely the pursuit of Aguinaldo. Like the 300 Spartans, Del Pilars 60 Filipino Soldiers of Independence inspired succeeding generations to honor the valor and sacrifice of the greatest generation of Filipinos centered on June 12,1898- the Independence Day of the Philippines- as the foundational narrative and text of the Filipino people, despite the United States and Japan colonizing the Philippines afterwards, the collective glory and nationalism surfaced during that Golden Age of the Philippines is invisible bond that unites all Filipinos together in its forward march to emerge from the shadow of its colonizers.
