One of the most creative, imaginative directors in the history of American film, Tod Brownings films were never without interest, and one such was 1935s The Devil Doll. Focusing on an escaped convict who uses a formula to shrink human beings to exact revenge on the three men who responsible for his conviction (for a crime he didnt commit), it features one of Lionel Barrymores best performances as the central figure, who disguises himself as a little old lady toyshop-keeper to advance his aims. Also featured were Maureen OSullivan, Frank Lawton (Hollywoods first David Copperfield, that same year), Henry B. Walthall, and, as Barrymores obsessed accomplice, Rafaela Otianno. Made for MGM, it features the studios usual high-budget, glamour treatment.
