One of the most frustrating things for a photojournalist is missing the key shot, which I did when Dr. Cornel West was arrested Monday during the protest in front of the Ferguson Police Department. There was so much going on and the rain was coming down so hard, that I completely missed it, even though I was in the midst of it. It may have gone down after my cameras stopped working from the rain – one which needs to get sent back to the shop and hopefully repaired under the existing warranty – because Theresa Richard and I headed back to the car because we were already drenched. Nevertheless, when Jason Bassler I were sitting at the airport bar in St. Louis this afternoon and spotted him (about an hour after Cassandra Fairbanks hopped on her flight to Los Angeles), we downed our drinks and ran after him because I at least wanted to get an interview about his arrest. Because in journalism, youre never going to get all the shots. Youre never going to get all the stories. You will scoop and be scooped and you always need to think of the next story, not the past story. And if you have a chance to move a story forward after youve been scooped, then you jump on it because the game of journalism never ends. The clock is always ticking. It was a spontaneous interview, which he at first refused because he had to catch a flight to New York, but I can be persistent. Two minutes is all it will take, I told him, and two minutes is all it took.. He told us he was being charged with assault on an officer and disorderly conduct, the former a complete fabrication considering all the protesters had their hands in the air, chanting hands up, dont shoot, the latter being the usual bullshit, contempt of cop charge cops throw in when they cant find anything else to charge you with.
