One of the most important responsibilities we have as senior - TopicsExpress

One of the most important responsibilities we have as senior nursing staff is both to inspire the newer staff venturing into this speciality, and to make sure that they do not lose sight of the incredible value inherent in the work they do. We must help them grow the skills, knowledge, values and confidence that empowers them to be the best they can be. Shift by shift and patient by patient. For it is the bedside nurse that is the true agent of change in our profession. Changing peoples lives sometimes in small ways, and sometimes in prprofound. All other change us secondary. As senior staff I believe it is also incumbent upon us to stop the passion leak. I see it all the time. New nurses come into the ED wide eyed with fire in their bellies…two, six, nine months later the fire is well and truly extinguished. And off they wander to become florists or bureaucrats or helicopter pilots. It is often the best nurses that loose the flame first. So we must be the fire wardens for our future nurses. And we probably...no definitely....we definitely should begin with a little introspective rekindling within our own bellies ’cause it takes fire to make fire.
