One of the most pleasant surprises of my time in New York so far - TopicsExpress

One of the most pleasant surprises of my time in New York so far is that I keep GETTING INVITED to play my music. I spent years hounding venues and promoters with emails and phone calls. If I had to guess, Id say that 10% or fewer wrote me back. Of those, an even smaller percentage agreed to book me. Gradually I made friends and was able to more easily book tours, but it still was an uphill battle. I gotta be honest with you, Ive probably sent out three booking requests in the last 6 months, and none in the last two or three. Thats down from about 5 a day two or three years ago. My life is changing, and Im cool with this. My eggs arent all in one basket anymore. And yet, I still find myself performing. About a gig or two a month. Its a much different pace from two or three years ago, but again, Im fine with this. The gig Im playing this weekend in the Upper West Side of Manhattan is no exception to this recent phenomenon. I was INVITED to play. And you know what? Im really looking forward to it! Melanie Penn, a fellow Brooklyn-based songwriter, is on the bill as well. Check out her stuff. I think youll like it. We may just even sing a tune or two together. Heres to working hard, but letting the game come to you.
