One of the most potent reminders of how much I’ve changed is the smell of grilling meat from a Persian restaurant that I pass almost daily. It is a smell that I used to associate so positively with countless social gatherings, holidays and traditions. These memories have been intercepted by scenes of very young animals in the last moments of their very short lives who are in a state of great fear and confusion as they are led down a kill line to meet an untimely, unnatural and violent end. Now I smell the grilled meat for what it is: the smell of their burning flesh, and this makes my skin crawl, my stomach turn and my mind revisit the terror and betrayal they must be experiencing in their last moments. My palate has changed because I caught a glimpse into their world. When I am asked now if I miss meat, dairy or eggs, I realize how disconnected that question is from the source. I look into that person’s eyes and I see where I once was. And I could never go back to that place.
