One of the most widely voiced fears of those who dont understand the Transfer of Public Lands Act is that the states may not be able to afford to manage their own lands. Nothing could be further from the truth. In the book, Who is Minding the Federal Estate?, author Holly Fretwell lays out the facts quite clearly. Not only do federal land agencies earn less than the state trust lands, they outspend state agencies by a wide margin. The Forest Service spends nearly thirteen times more per acre than the average state trust agency, and the National Park Service spends seventeen times more. Even the BLM, controlling 264 million surface acres and 300 million subsurface acres, outspends the average state trust more than two to one. These numbers dont even address the unused revenues available in our public lands, such as the timber that is currently rotting on our forest floors. Rather than providing income to our states it is becoming nothing more than fuel for our next raging forest fire. Study after study proves that our states are better managers of our public lands than any federal agency. And no one cares more about preserving our public lands than those of us who live here.
