One of the old dive bars in Fairhaven always did thriving business. Solveigs Settlement House, which was within spit distance, across the street, did settlements for both draggers and scalloppers. You most of the time had to wait an hour or two for your check, and that time was often spent drinking in that bar. If I had been there with my uncle Olav, my aunt Berit would just sniff the air and say You guys have been to the Ferry Café, I can smell it There was no denying that, and also a dead giveaway in those days were the Norwegian strikkekuftene that most of us wore. The wool in those probably picked up the stink from the bar more than we idiots realized. My aunt Berit could always tell if we came from there
