One of the principles of journalistic integrity is to be fair and comprehensive in reporting. Issue advocacy has an important place in the world, but that place is undermined when advocacy masquerades as journalism. When you see information about a controversial subject, you can often separate genuine reporting from biased position advocacy by asking questions like: Does the article accurately quote reliable sources on both sides of the issue? Does the article also quote reliable, independent observers? “Reporting” that does not hold to these standards may really be issue advocacy, not journalism.
