One of the problems with ignoring history is that those who do not ignore it are teaching your kids whatever they want while you say, “Who cares what happened long ago?” Charlatans with a degree then take your children and indoctrinate them in whatever they want to. Some people ask me at times why I bother to talk about slavery and defy the errors we are taught? I do it because present attitudes and decisions are often supported by certain historical claims and by certain manipulations of history. If some present American slavery as unique and blacks here as unique victims it is easy both to think that white people here are uniquely perverse and that there might be something uniquely wrong with American blacks. Both ideas are untrue but they feed on extreme historical thinking. Many whites who do not want me to talk about it are simply intimidated by the politically correct left and blacks are often unaware that some of the history they are told is simply untrue. African complicity in the slave trade is often overlooked by so-called “civil rights leaders.” However, other heroes of black America knew that the story they were being told was a tale: “The white people held my people in slavery here in America. They had bought us, it is true, and exploited us. But the inescapable fact that stuck in my craw was: my people had sold me… My own people had exterminated whole nations and torn families apart for a profit before the strangers got their chance at a cut. It was a sobering thought. It impressed upon me the universal nature of greed and glory.” –Zora Neal Hurston The same with Europe’s valiant fight to end the slave trade in the known world. The effort is one of the greatest achievements of mankind and it inspires a little more than a yawn on these “leaders.” Why? They do not want "white people" off the hook. Yet, we are hanging ourselves with that darn hook. Hypocrisy, I tell you!
