One of the saddest days of my life. I hate the way our county - TopicsExpress

One of the saddest days of my life. I hate the way our county works. The anguish that poor girl went through. The anguish WE all went through. Since FRIDAY, they knew she was dead...the killed her. And all weekend we had hope. But did the commissioner liaison Cherryl Walker have enough courtesy to call me and tell me? NO. Did Hoover? NO. They just left us ALL hanging. And Riley paid the price for being a sick dog. BE AWARE, Folks. Soon, they will start killing ALL dogs that come into the shelter and test positive; the vet who looked at Riley said this is ALREADY the case because the policy is that they will NOT release a dog for adoption that is carrying heart worm. They say the only way a positive dog can be adopted out is IF IT IS TREATED FIRST!!! This is what was on the memo that I recd at 10:19 this a.m.-- AFTER I left my home and computer. (Again, a phone call would have been the responsible and courteous thing.) Here it is...according to THESE words, ANY dog coming into the shelter that tests positive for heart worm is in danger: Heart worm is not a contagious disease such as a virus, but it is a mosquito borne disease such as malaria. A mosquito that bites an infected animal will then carry the disease to its next victim. Next...the memo states: The dog was evaluated by a licensed veterinarian and tested for heartworm, unfortunately a common condition found in stray animals and those not cared for by an owner. The dog was determined to be a senior dog more than 8 years old, tested positive for heart worm and had demonstrated aggressive behavior. Due to her condition and age it was recommended by the veterinarian the dog not be adopted and that she be euthanized. In accordance with all appropriate, humane methods, the dog was euthanized on Friday, Jan. 23. They COULD have had ME sign a liability release for the county, take her and have her treated for the heart worm, allow her to recover, and THEN get her adopted out. But no...it was more humane to kill her. Forgive my emotion. Its been along frustrating day. ALL of this could have been avoided if AC was not such a mess and if they would COMMUNICATE with the public in a friendlier, more approachable manner. I was continually checking in on Rileys status. She was not TESTED until shed been there for 12 stressful days. NO WONDER she was snarly. Her foster family, who had her for over three weeks, NEVER saw any signs of aggression. If Id been locked in confinement and then someone came in to poke and prod me after almost two weeks, Id be snarly too. Dont give up, folks. This is just the TIP of the problem. There WILL be more to follow.
