One of the suggestions was to share a story of an officer, and I have many... I have a wonderful friend who is in law enforcement, and thankfully after many tales of field trips, he took one with us to the zoo! It was great having him along! I think he still tells of his adventure with my students with Autism at the zoo. They didnt have many positive male role models, and just having him along was a gift to them and us! Many times the law enforcement officers would come into my classroom in uniform, they would sit with the kids, read to the them, just be a part, it was a partnership that I wanted to build for the officers and the kids. Then one day, we had a fire at the school, it was because of that prior engagements that my kids with autism just seem to know they were the good guys, and the officers were there to help. They helped my assistants and myself to keep the students calm and get them transferred out of the cold and they sat with us until their families came to get them. Later that same year, it was one of those officers who sat with me when one of my students was a victim to a murder. I have always appreciated and supported law enforcement officers, and hopefully I am raising Connor to do the same... they are truly the good guys!
