One popular tradition maintains that after Laozi left China he traveled to India where he instructed Siddhartha Gotama, whom he found sitting under the Bodhi tree; Gotama subsequently reached enlightenment and became the Buddha. A book popular in Daoist circles that in part records the teachings transmitted to Buddha, the Huahujing (Huahu Ching), attributed to Laozi,This tradition frequently also asserts that Laozi discovered the secret of immortality and thus never died. He is said to still be wandering with other immortals, or dwelling in some celestial sphere. Perhaps in reaction to this, Zhuangzi describes Laozis funeral as an event with many weeping mourners, something unseemly for a teacher who was supposed to have taught the non-duality of life and death.
