One should be thoughtful and consider the implications of creating an altar. Altars are external representations of relationships with areas of the mandala of Self, and thus constant attention and upkeep, either minor or major, needs to be maintained, like in any relationship. Water needs to be changed regularly, incense offered as well as fire. When an imbalance in the self is perceived, one can look at ones relationship with ones altars to see if theres anything thats been neglected and see if theres a correlation. How they balance with each other, work with one another, blend together... how they can sometimes dominate a space or sit unattended, slowly collecting a shadow of unconsciousness. Sure, that novel rush of creating an altar as a representation of Self is meaningful and exciting... but if its not tended to it becomes a piece of art instead. When this happens... how are we too comfortable in our self-concept? What part of our own spirituality are we not addressing? Altars, like a growing relationship with Spirit, need movement, attention, and gifts of beauty. An altar is a nexus where we reach out and Spirit reaches in. Its an active crossroad, a point of multilayered meaning intersecting. When we reach through this doorway to our very Self our very Self reaches back through and inspires us. How DO we keep this alive, and not let it become a stationary, inactive, piece of art... although beautiful to look at?
