One very exciting development at last weekends Salem indoor race - TopicsExpress

One very exciting development at last weekends Salem indoor race was the use of a new Motosponder RFID timing and scoring system. Go to any race scored by eyeballs-pen-and-paper and youll remember very quickly why automated systems became popular in the first place. Manual scoring accuracy drops quickly as the size of the field or the number of laps grows. But old-style AMB systems are also known for failures, and dont forget to return your transponders, is the frequent chorus at rider meetings from coast to coast. System operator Roger Freeborn showed us the Motosponder system, with its overhead sensor boom and stick-on transponders. The expensive part hangs from the ceiling, and the transponders are practically disposable. Sold to the racer at registration for a nominal cost, something like ten bucks, the transponder stays on the bike and goes home with the rider when the shows over. We saw no problems during the evening. Grid sheets and results were posted very quickly, and could also be viewed on your smartphone. This is only the second race that weve used it, said Freeborn. Were still working on the setup and still scoring manually as a backup. But it didnt miss a lap all night. Here are a few photos of the magic hardware.
