One year ago today, Freedom Industries spilled chemicals into the Elk River causing over 300,000 people to lose access to potable water for several weeks. I remember thinking the air smelled like licorice that morning, finding out later that it was the chemicals in the water causing the odor. My family and I were right in the middle of the red zone. Needless to say, we went through a lot of bottled water during the months of January and February. I wrote Must Be Something In The Water for a local compilation album to raise funds and awareness for clean water, and recorded it in a day with Bud Carroll at his home studio. I played the acoustic guitar, harmonica, and sang. The rest is all Bud. Tonight, I raise a bottle of water and share this song with you, in hopes that we never have to repeat the experience. I cant eat licorice to this day.
