One year ago today, Nick started a new chapter in his life leading him to Meadowbank, Nunavut. A place we had never heard of! He had a very small amount of information on what this new position consisted of. From the time he gave his notice at his previous position, at which he had been employed for 30 years, to when he stepped on that plane, what I remember most is his courage & bravery. We knew changes were coming, but had no idea just how big they would be, all we knew is that we would have to support each other like never before. When I received that first phone call after he settled in a bit, he was almost speechless, I know that’s hard to believe for Nick…lol but he was! As he described his new surroundings, I tried to picture everything in my head. It wasn’t until he came home with his camera full of pictures that I could easily see what he had been talking about! It’s a big ‘ole world outside of Thomaston Corner, NB! We’ve had a very interesting year to say the least! Nick always did everything! The step was shoveled and yard ploughed always before 7am. Grass mowed. Wood piled. Oil changed. Light bulbs changed, any odd sound or leak was quickly found and repaired on the spot. If sometime needed attention, it was done! No asking, No waiting. Now, things are not completed that promptly….lol But, one thing for sure is, I know I can survive 5 days x 2 with no power…wow! I prefer to be without power in the summer than in the winter!! lol Huge thanks to Brad & Cody for keeping me sane and playing countless games of UNO & for all your help! We saw Christmas day come and go without him, still trying to be supportive of him as he was feeling as bad as we were. It was the first Christmas we missed together in 23 years! Thank goodness for the unlimited use of the phones in Meadowbank, I don’t know what we would do if he couldn’t call home! Truly makes you appreciate the small things in life! He’s made some friends that will be lifelong no matter where their paths will lead. I’ve met some of his co workers and have to agree, they are an awesome people! I love hearing Nick tell stories of their lives and where they are going on vacation or what they are doing on their days off. I see a trip to Newfoundland & Miramichi in the near future! I believe they would all agree, you have to be like a family in order for it all to work! I remember when he first started in Meadowbank, he would say “Maybe a year, tops, that’s it!”, then as time went on, it was “Maybe a year and a half”…….now I’m hearing he would like to stay until they “shut the lights out”, whenever that may be. So proud of him for embracing this journey like a Champ and never looking back. He has always worked so hard to give our family everything. Sometimes working 2-3 jobs at a time to allow us to do the things we love & keep the bills paid. Nick has a tremendous work ethic that anyone would be hard pressed to match! I can remember Mom saying she would hear Nick on the scanner years ago all day & night, she would ask “does he ever go home?”…..lol Times have changed but we sure have come a long way baby!! Thank you Nick for all you do! xoxo
