Online college admissions from 2015 Kolkata, 19 November: Having put on hold the introduction of online admission for colleges in the state soon after he took over as education minister in May, Mr Partha Chatterjee today told the Assembly that the online admission system will become operational from the 2015-16 academic year. Mr Chatterjee said that the vice-chancellors and principals of all government and government-aided institutions had been asked to make necessary preparations to implement the system. He said that the state government have already sanctioned Rs 1.5 lakh to each of the colleges for this. Mr Chatterjee informed that 20 new colleges would be set up in the state by next year. “Students will be able to seek admission using the online system in both the new and existing colleges.” The minister added that the government has fixed some parameters for setting up new colleges in rural and city areas. “It will be mandatory to have two acres of land to set up a new college in urban areas; in rural areas the land requirement will be five acres,” he said. The college authorities will be required to deposit Rs 15 lakh as fixed bank deposit for five years and another Rs 5 lakh will have to be deposited to meet recurring expenses of a college. Taking part in the debate, Congress MLA, Mr Nepal Mahato, demanded that the state government augment the infrastructure for vocational education in the state. SNS
