Review by Louise Eatock Set around the turn of the 20th Century and based on a novel by Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle, Simon Corble’s play “The Hound of The Baskervilles” is a riveting “Who done it” well worth watching. The play was written for both open air and Theatre performance. It is essentially a ghost story set on the open moors of Dartmoor and full of dramatic suspense, action and humour and it is clear how well it would lend itself to open air performance. However, the fantastic stage, sound effects, set design and use of the auditorium by Nomads during tonight’s performance gave the comings and goings on the moor real energy and pace. The opening scene, a play at a fair, sets the tone and introduces the legend of The Hound with hilarity. The old English Dartmoor accents were a treat as were the sound effects and props. We journeyed back in history to a thoroughly Victorian time of proper manners with lines such as, “Would you mind just hiding behind that rock for a moment?” and a steadfast class system. Bringing such an iconic figure as Sherlock Holmes to the stage is no easy feat but both Kris Camden, who played Holmes, and Eric Maguire, who played Dr Watson embodied the roles magnificently. As with most murder mysteries all the character’s lives are interwoven and have a sense of mystery, intrigue and dark secrets. By the interval I had everyone down as a suspect. This dramatic tension was achieved brilliantly. I waited with anticipation for The Hound to appear. No spoilers….but appear it does. There is something magical about live theatre, something that television and film cannot create. There is an energy that is created between the audience and the cast, an interaction that becomes part of the performance. Even when things don’t go exactly to plan, live theatre creates a real and unforgettable experience. I thoroughly enjoyed tonight’s performance. The directors and cast had clearly been very creative in bringing this tale to life. It could be argued that attempting such a play was, “rather a rash thing to do.” But it worked fantastically well and concluded brilliantly, which meant that my children and I didn’t have nightmares.
