Open Challenge#2 Commentaries. Post processing can enhance your images even if you had perfect exposures and in some situations recover poor photographs. Some photographers do not like to post process as they want to have pure photographs, even the money making Australian photographer Peter Lik, contends that he does not post process his images. (this is for another debate). In my case I decided to post process when one time I was shooting at night and changed the white balance to Tungsten, the next day while shooting a landscape during the day I forgot to change WB setting so my red rock mountains became guess. Now because I shoot in raw, I could have easily corrected the white balance. 1. This is another item for discussions, shoot raw of jpeg. There are pros and cons. I shoot raw. if you shoot jpeg then like GA, try to use some built-in presets in camera that will do the post processing while converting to jpeg, like pictures style, noise reduction, etc. 2. Post process or not, this is not the question, the question is how much post processing do you do, because even the photographers of films and black and white days do post process, they call that retouching and special techniques in the dark room, like dodging(lighten) and burning(darken) and cropping, alignment /straightening. At a minimum do those adjustments too, specially straightening and exposure/contrast. AE suggest the next challenge will be minimum post processing. Even in you smart phones do some post processing to tune up the image. Most young people do their post processing with filters in instagram or the many photography apps like snapseed. 3. Postprocessing allows you to replicate some physical tools, like GND- Gradated Neutral Density filters. I use this regularly to adjust my landscapes. The cloning and healing brush are important at the very least to remove dust, dirts on lenses and sensors that show up in the photo. Some post processing techniques will allow you to simulate tilt shift lens or special star filters. My favorite is blurring the image or reducing clarity, aka skin smoothing, to enhance the close up face of women. It used to be vaseline are placed on the lens to create the blur and even focus vignetting. If you dont like complicated workflows, then press are available, even standard presets that is a duplicate of the picture settings in your cameras.
