Open Letter to the GOP leaders: I just listened to Senator - TopicsExpress

Open Letter to the GOP leaders: I just listened to Senator Mitch McConnell’s speech. It was an excellent talk and I thoroughly applaud his comments about resolving the dysfunction within the Senate. For the GOP to survive, it must demonstrate to the American people that the Republicans are more than obstructionists; that we can and will govern effectively for the good of all Americans. The past six years have been marred with a divisive and ineffective government that placed partisan politics above the good of the nation. We need to step above the fray, reach out to the President, and find areas where we can reach common ground. For the past few years, the leaders of the GOP have been ‘held hostage’ by extremists within our own party. Yesterday’s gains have provided the more reasonable and moderate leaders with some protection from that. These leaders will be leading from a much stronger position now, and hopefully, a few extremists can no longer hold the nation hostage. In this context, we must not tackle issues that have no hope of producing a result such as the wholesale repeal of the ACA. But rather, look for ways to improve the law that can gain at least some support or acceptance by some moderate democrats. This could include repealing the medical device tax, or the employer mandate for part-time employees. There are many other issues that, if framed properly, can gain some bipartisan support. These would include immigration reform, the authorization of the Keystone pipeline, appropriate steps to contain ISIS, and possibly reasonable bi-partisan tax reform. Let’s not squander this opportunity to show the American public that the Republicans can reach across the aisle and lead for the good of the entire country.
