Open Letter to the Spokesman Review - In response to the request for an interview with the Spokesman Review’s editorial board: I decline because of their long-standing, well-established bias against my candidacy and my accomplishments. The Spokesman Review has consistently misrepresented my record and reputation, saying in 2012: “Shea has used the position as a platform for espousing conspiracy theories instead of doing the more mundane work of legislating”. As a conservative Republican in the minority party of the State House of Representatives, with 12 of my sponsored bills being signed into law by our liberal Democrat Governor in just this last legislative biennium alone, the facts show that I do place a great deal of emphasis on “the more mundane work of legislating”. The Spokesman Review asserted: “[His 2012 opponent is] likely than Shea to work across the aisle on issues important to the district.” Again, with over 50 Democrat co-sponsors supporting the legislation I sponsored in the last biennium alone – your “newspaper” not only called it wrong, but attempted to sway voters by editorializing ‘what could have happened’, versus assessing my record and my campaign platform. Lastly, and most obviously, my record and motto of: Lower Taxes, Less Government, and More Freedom is directly at odds with the self-proclaimed liberal views of the Spokesman Review’s editorial board – where, in their own words, they assert: “[Shea’s 2012 opponent] supports Referendum 74 (gay marriage) and Initiative 502 (marijuana legalization), but opposes Initiative 1185 (supermajorities for tax increases)… is more liberal than typical representatives from the 4th District, but… much closer to the center than her opponent. [His opponent] is the sensible choice in this race.” The question isnt one of left or right or center but who best reflects the views of my constituents. Walking door-to-door, hosting community meetings, and working the campaign trail to meet with the constituents of the 4th District is a much better, and honestly, a more effective use of my time. Sincerely, Matt
