Open Notes Sadly for some, Lent often involves giving up something that they could really otherwise do without. Each year we hear of certain foods, habits, words, and an endless list of things that we will sacrifice for a WHOLE FORTY DAYS to prove we are “religious”. “I would just die for a hamburger or a Hersey Bar but I swore off of them for Lent”. Really? Jesus tells us that we are not to make a spectacle of ourselves as we give to the poor, or pray, or fast – that no one is to ever see the sacrifice that is within us. The only one who is to know is God. Is giving up a token thing for God going to impress him and get you through the Pearly Gates? What do you think? Lent, starting with Ash Wednesday is when we take a hard look at our selves. Just days ago we were dust, and before you know it, that is where we will return. The time in between – just a brief moment, is all time we have to make a difference in the world, in the lives of others and in ourselves. So when you think of something you can give up, or give back to others, consider that the return will far out weight what you gave. So eat and enjoy that Hersey Bar - but consider: giving an hour a day to prayer; take the money you saved by not “eating out at lunch” to buy food for the hungry; give your pocket change or folding money to The Needy Bucket for it is always empty. God will know. He is the only one who matters. Peace in Christ, Pastor Mike
