Open Submissions for Nashville Gothic-Parthenon Press Parthenon Press published NASHVILLE NOIR, which featured many authors from our group. I am happy to announce that Parthenon Press is having an open submission call for a follow-up anthology to Nashville Noir. A. Jay Lee’s letter follows: “Open Submission Parthenon Press is doing a follow-up anthology to Nashville Noir Submissions for ‘Nashville Gothic’ are now opened until January 30, 2014. We will judge entries on quality of writing, originality, creativity, inclusion of the thematic elements, and in compliance with submission requirements. Winners will be chosen based on writing scores, length, and compatibility with other selections in the final project. Writers must be willing to work with editorial staff to revise their work to meet PP standards. The common theme in this anthology is southern Gothic set in Nashville Tennessee. Southern Gothic is a sub John or of Gothic fiction unique to American literature that takes place exclusively in the American South. This literature include deeply flawed, disturbing or eccentric characters who may or may not dabble in folk magic, ambivalent gender roles and decayed or derelict settings, grotesque situations, and other sinister events relating to or coming from poverty, alienation, racism, crime, and violence. Requirements · Submissions must be received before January 30, 2014. · Work must fall into the southern Gothic category and be set in the middle Tennessee area. · The work can be set anytime between Reconstruction and present day. · Word count should be 2500 to 7500. · Stories received outside submission window will not be considered rated. PP will announce winners on or about February 28, 2014. Submission procedures Please follow these instructions exactly. Failure to do so will result in automatic rejection. Include in your submission material: · “[TITLE OF WORK] by [author] for Nashville Gothic” should be in the subject line of the mail. · Email submission to [email protected] · Name, address, and contact information. o Length of short story. o Authors credentials and/or writing experience. Technical specifications · Top of every page of the manuscript should include: TITLE justified left. o Authors first initial in full last name justified right. · One-inch (1”) margins all around. · Only use .doc or.docx formats. No other formats will be accepted. · All manuscript must be double space. · Indent the first line of each paragraph by .5 inches. · Use Calibri 12 pt font. · To make a break in the manuscript use *** Do not manipulate font or formatting, other than italicized for emphasis. · Attach file to the email and send to [email protected] Things to know Unfortunately, we lack the resources to provide rejected authors with a lengthy explanation or pointers to how to improve their work. Please know the acquisition committee judges the following criteria. · Marketability · Originality of material · Grammatical skills · Technical skills · Story structure · Character development · Vocabulary · Inappropriate content · Author/publisher synergy · Demonstrated ability to follow instructions PP does not publish erotica, or manuscript promoting child abuse.” There you have it.
