Open letter, not a call to arms but a call to think, to the citizens, residents and subjects of Washington state. “Posterity! You will never know how much it cost the present Generation to preserve your Freedom! I hope you will make good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in Heaven, that I ever took half the Pains to preserve it.” -John Adams We in Washington state have been offered with the option to offer up the 10th Amendment in order to preserve the 2nd. How did we get here to this place where we are now in negotiations for levels of servitude? Have we come so far that we must piecemeal and sacrifice one right in order to maintain another? What is it that makes the 10th Amendment so much less important than any other that it is what must be given up as the best option in hopes that these actions would lead to tie ups in the judicial system? Are we to the point that in order to avoid violence and preserve some freedom that we must turn our backs on some of our freedoms merely to postpone said violence? Who are we postponing that violence for? Who are we pushing that violence onto so that we may not have to visit it? Are they so less deserving of Freedom and Liberty that they must be the ones, who if they want it, are to secure it themselves? What better option do we have than to give up an enumerated right? When the founding generation of this country came to the conclusion in their hearts and their minds, that life was not worth living without the ability to determine what was best for themselves in their own lives and that of their posterity, they had no idea what would be the results of their actions. Even without knowing what their actions would result from declaring sovereign citizenship, they were fully aware what their compliance and to acquiesce would mean for them and their posterity. They sacrificed life and blood and the separation from loved ones forever upon this earth to give their posterity the chance at something better, self determination. We have lived in the pleasures of the results of their actions and seem to take it for granted. Now we find ourselves in this place of speaking of Liberty, Freedom, and Self Determination, while riding on the coattails of the patriotic actions from the past 235+ years. We offer up Freedoms and Liberties in exchange for others as bargaining chips, for those Freedoms and Liberties were not paid for by most of us here now. We have no skin in the game, nor do we wish to give any, so we finally offer up our wrists, hoping the chains rest lightly. We tell ourselves that we must give up some of our Freedom and Liberty, so we might retain others, for a little while longer. It is a wonder that maybe the thought that what we leave our posterity, is not quite the essential concern for us now. What we leave them, might it be better than what we have now. I pray. For those of you who would negotiate my Freedom and Liberty, I leave you with this: “If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.” - Samuel Adams
