Operation TransFaughmation – My Story (by Denise Carey) I registered for my ‘TransFaughmation’ experience in September 2012. It was a huge step for me as prior to this I had merely dabbled in the world of fitness. I had run/walked a few Dublin Mini Marathons in my twenties before marriage and babies came along. Exercise in my early thirties no longer became a priority due to the everyday pressures that motherhood and working full time brought. However, after my third child, I became a keen walker and this was soon a regular part of my daily routine. I joined ‘Transfaughmation’ ready for a change in regime and in the hope of becoming fitter and perhaps ‘shaping up’ along the way. I followed the ‘Transfaughmation’ programme weekly and attended as many classes as possible enjoying not only the physical challenge but the social benefits of it all. My favourite session, but yet the most dreaded, was the Sunday morning ‘walk to run’ programme. It pushed you to work as hard as you wanted and you were only ever competing with yourself to improve on your previous week’s performance. All the hard work over the weeks culminated in the annual 5k run in December. It was a most rewarding and enjoyable day for me and the many participants. Completing the 5k run in a time that I was happy with created a hunger within me to extend my distance over the next few months. A half marathon in March was duly achieved and then in August I started following a marathon training programme for 12 weeks. I finished my first and probably my last marathon in October with an overwhelming feeling of relief and joy. It was a most special and unforgettable day for me and for all my family. Without doubt I owe it all to the wonderful committee who continue to co- ordinate the successful fitness programme and experience that is OPTM!!!! I would urge you to commit to the programme as set out and hopefully like me you will surprise yourself in what you can achieve. You never know what you are capable of until you try!
