Opportunities in conservation: Associate Conservation Scientist at Yale University. In its continuing effort to support the conservation of cultural property through scientific research and innovation, the Art Conservation Research Center (ACRC), a part of the Center for Conservation and Preservation at Yale’s West Campus, seeks a full-time scientist to perform research into the effects of light on museum, library, and archival materials. The research will primarily involve the use and further development of the micro-fading technique pioneered at the ACRC. The development would include evaluating the limitations of the technique and establishing protocols for its application to photographic print materials and manuscript inks. Other investigations would explore the chemistry of light-induced color changes and the dark chemistry of light-sensitive residues in photographic prints. These investigations could become collaborations with other scientists at Yale, other universities, and museum laboratories. In addition to this laboratory research, this position will utilize the micro-fading tester to provide diagnostic services, examining Yale collection objects for their vulnerability to light damage. This position reports to the Director of the Art Conservation Research Center. Principle Responsibilities: 1. Designs and performs research projects relating to the analysis or degradation of materials used in fabricating or stabilizing cultural property and natural history collection objects. 2. Prepares written reports of research findings and status, and prepare and present lectures describing research findings at professional conferences and other venues. 3. Performs examinations or analytical tests on Yale collection objects upon request, and assists in the preparation of reports describing those findings. 4. Provides support to other scientists at the Art Conservation Research Center and Center for Conservation and Preservation, and participates in shared duties, such as managing instrument maintenance and compliance with safety protocols. 5. May supervise and mentor fellows, interns, or student researchers. 6. May organize workshops and events staged by Yale Research Centers. 7. Participates in occasional teaching and guest tours. 8. May perform other duties as assigned. To apply go to the following site and enter STARS Requisition number 24121BR: yale.edu/hronline/careers/application/external/index.html
