Opposition against GM Crops is baseless Shahid t India needs an agricultural technology policy. Agriculture should be treated as a knowledge driven industry and not as a traditional vocation. For this the Biotechnology Regulatory Bill (BRAI) is an urgent need. But those who are opposing the GM crops fiercely oppose the introduction of this bill. As a country which millions are under the threat of malnutrition we needs to develop our research on agricultural biotechnology? By opposing the GM based research we missed many opportunities such as the vast scope in the field of Marker assisted selection breeding (MAS), reverse breeding, grafting etc and a gamut of strategies like zinc finger nuclease. In agriculture biotech itself China produces more than 6,000 PhDs. But India in whole science produce less than9, 000.so a flexible policy is needed from activists. What is the problem with BT Cotton, which we developed before? it is alone made India a cotton exporting country from importing stage. In US they are eating BT Soya, Bt corn for many years. Their livestock eat BT Corn. No authentic health hazard is reported. Main concern is on the role of MNCs. Activists state they will control the agricultural market. By this they oppose MNCs not the technology. Then it is the best to utilize our own institutions towards these researches.
