Thanks to Patriot Nation for this lifesaving SHARE~ SHARE PATRIOTS SHARE!! ~ Lin Survival 101: water collection The most important part of survival is making sure you always collect enough water. Dehydration is one of the most life threatening things that can happen in a survival situation. I am going to explain a few simple ways to gather extra water. The evaporation bag is a low maintainence method of gathering some extra water. This method will not sustain permanently, but with a few bags out gathering a cup or two of water it can make the difference between life and death. I especially like it because it is so low maintenance. Lets get started. In both our bug out kit, and bug out bag we have clear trash bags and paracord. These are the only two things we will need. Select a tree or bush that you know is not poisonous. Inspect the leaves to ensure the plant is not diseased, (no holes, rotting, or other abnormalities) if it passes then we can use it. An important thing to note is that the water collected will taste like the plant you choose. I like to use maple in this method. I find it to be less obnoxious than most others. Grab a branch with a bundle as large as you can fit in the bag without worrying about puncturing it. Tie the branch down so it runs approximately parallel to the ground. (often this step is unnecessary.) Place a 1 inch rock in the bag. Slip the bag over the branch and settle the rock in the bottom of the bag where the water will collect. Tie the end of the bag around the branch to seal it off. I prefer to use a clove hitch, or a double half hitch. Now it is a waiting game. The more humid it is the more will collect and sunlight/ heat will help it happen faster. I wouldnt even bother trying this in the winter if it is cold in your area. Under ideal conditions I have collected 1 cup of water in 12 hours with a 40 gallon bag. To retrive the water either put a small hole in the bottom of the bag and re-tie it after, or slip the bag off and dump it out. The latter is what I do, thus my knot choices. When the plant begins showing signs of stress switch to a new branch. I cannot stress enough. This cant be used as your sole collection source! We will go over more methods in the future. As an added bonus, you can plant these all over your area, giving you needed water while checking traps or gathering food. Remember, smart lives, inefficient dies. -Jonathan
