Oriental Daily Column (2014-7-10) Toilet training is one of the topics that causes most concern to dog owners, and sometimes it is even the top criterion of adopters. It is actually not difficult to toilet train a dog if you understand and can make use of their natural behaviour. With just a little bit of patience you will have a dog with lifelong good toileting habits which makes that initial effort worthwhile. Dogs are naturally clean animals. They dont like to soil their sleeping and eating area so their toilet spot should be separate from where they generally live. Some people put their puppies inside a wire cage or crate to prevent them from having toilet accidents around the home, but if they are confined for too long it will only have a counter-productive effect. Dogs and puppies that have no choice and are forced to toilet inside a cage will quickly lose their natural instinct, which makes potty training much more difficult. If you need to confine a puppy the area should be large enough to have the dog bed, water bowl and toys separate from the pee pads or newspaper inside. Once the dog is more reliable in toilet training, it should gradually have its freedom increased. Puppies usually toilet after sleeping, eating and play time. If dog parents can monitor these activities and take their puppy to the designated toilet spots at the appropriate times, then praising enthusiastically for positive results, the puppy will soon understand this is the spot you want her to do her business. What if she has accidents? If you can catch the puppy in action, you can interrupt her and immediately take her to the designated spot to continue her business. If you only discover her accident after a while, it is meaningless to scold, punish or push her nose towards the urine. The puppy wont make any connection with your actions and the cold puddle. Its much more useful to thoroughly clean the place and try harder next time!
