Orientalism as an artistic force in the 19th Century is an endlessly fascinating thing. Musical Russia caught the bug and was never cured of it. A good thing. Heres a rarely performed/recorded orchestral work that showcases this phenomenon. It was written by one of the strongest exponents of musical Orientalism, Glazunov (1865-1936), whose mentor, Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908), was also another great musical Orientalist. Little wonder, Russian culture is a hybrid of the Occidental and the Oriental. And, heres another fun-fact: Glazunov wrote this in 1882, while still a teenager. It deserves to be as popular as, say, Rimsky-Korsakovs Russian Easter Festival Overture. And, there can be no higher praise, apropos this particular musical-cum-aesthetic context. youtube/watch?v=HII3x8YNEGE
